Is a custom design really that much more valuable than an attractive template?

If you can find a template that matches all your needs then why would you opt for a custom design. You can always make some changes in the template to get exactly what you want.

Everything depends on your needs really. For some cheap projects, for example, I prefer using some templates from http://www.webstarts.com/designs website for Webstarts web builder. I like it because it is totally free and comprehensive. And for some more serious things like eCommerce I prefer using the help of web design companies

Personally I prefer using simple website builders as they are really easy-to-use and don't require coding skills. Also some of them are available for free, so it can be a good choice, especially if you are on the budget.
